Pursuit Night 5/24

I had an idea that I wanted to float here before doing it because I don't want to make people mad or keep them from coming to pursuit night.

What do people think of a gear restriction for the 500m and 2000m at the next pursuit night?

There are a few reasons. One, most people use those two events as warmups for the 1k and 3k. Two, if you've read my post How to go Faster, you know that I think leg speed is a very critical skill to develop, so this would help. The last one is that it helps level the playing field a bit, especially for people on bikes provided by the track since they can't change gears. Increasing competition is never a bad thing, right?

The other events would still be open-gear, it would just be those two and likely just for this one night. But if nobody will show up or if nobody will sign up for the events, then I don't want to do it. I am thinking a gear up to either 82" or 87".

My view of these race nights, especially this early in the season, is that it's really about training and not so much about "racing." So I'd rather help people build good skills and techniques if possible. Let me know what you guys think.

Instead of restriction...

How about just taking data on the gearing used for each ride on all of the events? Plot out times vs. gearing and post it afterward. That way, if the data show that a lower gear is optimum, everyone will be able to see it. Keep adding to the data each month.

> You won't make anyone mad.
> You won't restrict people who don't have the right gearing from riding.
> The smart ones (there must be a few) will show up in June and July with the optimal gearing, making things more competitive.

I second that. It allows

I second that. It allows everyone the freedom to do what they want and it allows the nerdier folks to compile everything in spreadsheets. Everybody wins....
