I'm not 100% up on cross categorization, usacycling.org might shed some more light on that, but I am led to believe that your cross category is the same as your road category. So if you were a Cat 4 or 5 on the road you would race the C(CX4) event.
Jeff, you're right. It goes based on your road category, or if you have an MTB license there is a conversion table as well. But you have to have a USA Cycling license (or the one day pass which will make you a 5 for the day).
