Gear selection?

As ya'll know, I'm new to track racing. I am trying to get a handle on this whole gear selection thing.
Right now, I have 48 and 50t fronts and 14,15,16 cogs. I'm racing 48x14 right now and feel like this is a good gear for me so far.
What considerations do you guys make when selecting a gear? Is it just whether or not you're gonna spin it out into turn 3?

You'll have to experiment
You'll have to experiment with a different gears to see how they feel for you, each person is a little different. Get yourself a 51 and a 52t chainrings and you have most of everything you'll need. also get a gear chart to work out the different incriments.

I like the 51x15 as my all
I like the 51x15 as my all around race gear
In general I would recommend the following for wednesday/tuesday mass racing:
D/C groups 48/49x15 or 52x16
C/B groups 49/50/51 x 15
A group 51/52 x 15 or 48x14
New riders should also spend some time on rollers a 3 to 5 times per week to help develop their spin and to help learn how to ride a straight line.
