8 mile

Not just for Eminem...

Did anybody have a speedo on last night for the 8 mile event? We did not set the record... and I am wondering if it was because we went out too hot and burned everybody out.

I know (and Pete pointed out) I made a personal tactical error and did a monster pull in the middle of the race, trying to close a gap. I burned myself out... had I pulled off and let others close the gap with me, I think I would have been in for at least another 2-3 pull cycles....

re: 8 MILE

So when you say "close the gap with me", you really mean "close the gap FOR you" right?

Sure, you can call it that if you would like.

My rider head didn't work. My coach/announcer head would have told anybody to pull off after a 1/2 lap or lap and not detonate with 20 laps to go.

The real mistake I made was not anticipating the acceleration after the slowdown... I'm more upset about that one.

Next time we need to be conscience of splits... know the split times to beat @ a certain lap count. ... or just ride faster. ;)

Jeff,

I'm going to bring a split sheet... and "hire" a coach to help us.

In a longer effort, it's best to start "fast" and get faster. You will almost never set a record by going faster and exploding...

pacing

The key is to meter efforts like a time trial. There are plenty of references out there but the negative split concept seems applicable here. Start just under top sustainable pace and work into the "threshold" and then kick it to the end.

Exactly.... I am wondering

Exactly.... I am wondering if we started a bit hot. Being the one how hit pulled second ... I may have had something to do with that!

spread the workload

For the first 4 turns, I took 1 lap pulls. I could have conserved and taken 1/2 lap pulls instead. During my turns, I made sure I kept the pace exactly as when I pulled through. I don't have speed, only cadence. My pulls were in the range of 99-104 rpm in a 92.6in gear. That's roughly 27.5 - 28.75 mph (approx).
