DLV Learning Center : UCI Points and Madison Race Rules
In our latest installment of the DLV Learning Center we have a pdf document that has been produced by the UCI to explain some rules for track racing. There is more than just Points and Madison rules in the document and we'll be rolling those out over the next few weeks.
A couple of key things to note about Points and Madison races. They are scored very similarly, with one major exception that came about through a Points Race rule change at some point around 2004. The difference relates to lapping the field, where a Madison is always scored on distance, and then points, whereas a points race is scored on points alone. A rider lapping the field in a points race scores 20 points towards his total, where a team in a madison lapping the field is considered to be one lap ahead. In order for any team to beat that team, they would also need to lap the field, and then be ahead of that team on points.
At the Dick Lane Velodrome, we typically hold sprints in Points Races every 5 laps and in Madisons every 10 laps. This is subject to change, so be sure to listen to the judges instructions before each race.
